What does isopropyl alcohol do?
Isopropyl alcohol (IPA), with chemical formula C3H8O, breaks down the thin layer of peptidoglycan commonly found outside of the plasma membrane and cell wall of microorganisms.
A 70% solution of IPA is the most ideal concentration. It is important to note that IPA of 99%+ is ineffective in disinfecting microorganisms, because it creates instant coagulation and coats a protein layer that protects the microbes in a dormant stage. With the addition of 30% purified water, this IPA solution is less prone to evaporation, and thus has more contact time to penetrate the cell wall of the microbe, destroying it completely.
A USP-grade IPA solution is of higher standard because it meets the important requirements for quality, potency, consistency and purity.
